Exploring Health and Wellness in Austin, Texas
I spent the last week in Austin, Texas
to see family, friends and explore during my son’s spring break. I’ve not really spent time in Texas and I’ve heard so many good things about the city so I was excited. It’s definitely a hub when it comes to health, wellness, technology, vibes and more. I often give a breakdown of how I spent my travels but this one was very family centric so instead I am highlighting all of the health and wellness related stuff I got into as a guide if you’re looking for recommendations during your next trip to Austin.
STAY:
We stayed at the Colton House which was great because it was a mix of apartment style rooms with a kitchen/washer and dryer plus hotel amenities with a pool, coffee shop, bar, and food truck. There was a great common area we also were able to use as a large group for an easy pizza dinner and space for all the kids to hang. I loved the combo of this because it enabled us to wash our clothes throughout the trip, make breakfast which was healthier/cost effective but also get a delicious cup of coffee or a cocktail/mocktail and hang out by the pool. It was a nice hotel with a vibe but was chill enough we felt comfortable to really be ourselves. They also have a Chicago location for future reference!
EAT:
There’s a lot of heavy food down here - BBQ and more! It’s so good but after a few delicious meals something light like a big salad, etc. can be just what the doctor ordered. How I navigated big BBQ meals and meats was I always started with a big load of salad, slaw, veggies, etc. I skipped out on the fried goods (mainly because not my thing) and the bread they served and instead opted for veggies and protein. I did splurge when I felt it was worth it for cornbread at Leroy and Lewis, ice cream at Amy’s Ice Cream and Gati, etc. I fully believe in leaning into your eating with intuition but also eating in a way that loves me back. Balancing these two mindsets allowed me to truly enjoy it all, guilt free.
Loro’s BBQ - Asian inspired BBQ. This was such a fun experience. Their asian influenced BBQ had all the flavors I love - pickled onions, kimchi, and more. I loved their slaw and brisket (my first time having it and I get it!). Lots of gluten free options that are labeled.
Vinaigrette - my dream restaurant really! It’s every kind of salad you could imagine, so creative, yet filling and a total vibe with the huge trees and lights. The also have some kid friendly things on the menu like mac and cheese and popovers.
Fresa’s - Mexican. This was so good and had a great big yard if your kids need a minute to run around. I got a huge Mexican Cesear salad and it was SO good.
Otoko - Japanese Omakase. This was an experience beyond just a meal - and one unlike anything I’ve ever experienced. This is pricey but worth it. My favorite part was there was a tea tasting as an option in lieu of alcohol.
Cafe No Se - all day dining and casual American faire. I got the kimchi hash and it was perfect.
Meteor - part of a bike shop. It has food all day plus wines and delicious coffee. We got breakfast burritos and they were delicious, bonus point for a gluten free option!
Leroy and Lewis - BBQ. They’ve be awarded a Michelin star and had something for everyone new and old school BBQ. Lots of gluten free options and veggies to compliment the meats. I got the flat iron with a side of kale cesear slaw, burnt ends cauliflower and while it wasn’t gluten free I went for it anyways because it’s one of my favorite things, the corn bread! It was worth every bite.
Gati Ice Cream - gluten free and dairy free treats. This is a must try! We got the mint chip ice cream and a cone and it was so good! Perfect for cooling off mid day in Austin.
Amy’s Ice Cream - homemade old school ice cream. Get the Mexican Vanilla, it’s life changing!
Thai Fresh - Thai food. This place is related to Gati Ice Cream and it’s full of all kinds of fresh options that are a nice repreve when you need a break from Tex-Mex and BBQ. We got the papaya salad, golden chicken/tofu, and pad thai. It’s a casual place when you need a break from “dining”.
The Salty Donuts - fancy donuts. I don’t care for donuts but my son was in heaven with all the options. They did have a gluten free whoopie pie donut if that matters to you!
De Nada Cantina - Mexican. This place was legit, authentic and so good. It had a great vibe to it, apparently has been ranked the best magarita in town 2 years in a row (I didn’t try them but they looked good!) and had something for everyone. We rode our bikes here. We got guac, a carnitas, chicken and fish taco. All were outstanding!
EXERCISE:
ACTIVITIES:
UT Austin Baseball Games (or any sport in season!)
Bike rental and riding around Lady Bird Lake and Path
Barton Springs Pool - bring your own floats if you’d like!
SHOPPING:
byGeorge - reminds me of Barneys, beautiful curation of clothes and more
Stag Men’s Shop - super selection for men on South Congress
Maufrais - beautiful hats, crystals, flowers and more on South Congress
Goorin Bros Hat Shop - on South Congress
Tiny Grocer - small selection of artisan foods, gifts, wines, coffee and more on South Congress
South Congress in general is great for wandering around and all the Cowgirl/Boy inspired gear you could imagine!
