The Benefits of Practicing Gratitude

Why practice gratitude?

The benefits of gratitude on our overall health and well being are big. For me, it’s always the reality check I need especially if I’ve started to go down the rabbit hole of self doubt, etc. My most favorite place to go that is always helps me find this is nature. More specifically, seeing the sunrise or sunset I find is the perfect chance to think about what I have and give gratitude for it all. Keep reading for the benefits and some key ways to actively practice gratitude.

Benefits include:

  • Reduced Depression

  • Less Anxiety

  • Supports Heart Health

  • Relieves Stress

  • Improves Sleep

  • Reminds us what’s important

  • Boosts your mood

  • Encourages staying in the present moment

  • Increased longevity - one study shows a 9% lower risk of dying!

Tips for Practicing Gratitude:

  • Write it down

  • Slow down to think about why you’re saying thanks

  • Redirecting your thoughts

  • Share your gratitude

  • Spend time in nature

  • Go around the dinner table and share what you’re grateful for that day

  • Leave yourself a note to remind yourself what you’re grateful for

Questions to help start reflection:

  • What happened today that was good?

  • What am I taking for granted that I can be thankful for?

  • Who in my life am I grateful for?

  • What was something I was wanting or working for and now have?

  • What am I most looking forward to the near future?

  • What is the kindest thing someone has said or done for me lately?
